Our Mission
To provide a facility for present and future generations, to become aware of conservation education, outdoor survival skills and to allow a wilderness experience.
Ownership
Originally incorporated as a society under the Alberta Corporate Registry on April 5, 2004 as The Zone 4/5 Narrow Lake Conservation Education Centre, now renamed Narrow Lake Conservation Centre. As a joint project of both Zone 4 and 5 of the Alberta Wildlife Federation (previously AFGA), both zones provide the members of the Board of Directors to the society.
Location and Facilities
Narrow Lake is in a picturesque 471 acre setting, approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Athabasca, with access from Highway 2. The existing facility includes a classroom, kitchen house, dock, bunkhouses, wilderness survival training area, a trap facility as well as a rifle and archery range.
The lake itself is a usually clear water lake for Alberta and is used for scuba training at times. Both the Junior Forest Wardens and Air Cadets have neighboring facilities, and have at times in the past, requested the additional use of our camp.
Our History
In approximately 1968 the Alberta Fish and Game Association (AFGA) commenced conservation training at Narrow Lake. Other groups, such as schools, archery, scuba, survival training and other outdoor enthusiasts have used the facility over the years.
In the later part of the 1990’s the Alberta Hunter Education Instructor Association (AHEIA) obtained operational control of the facility. In 2003 AHEIA decided to concentrate all their funding and efforts on only one Alberta location in Central Alberta, Alford Lake. The Narrow Lake facility was closed, and activities curtailed.
As a result of the loss of this facility, and especially because of the historical ties to it, the Zone 4 and 5 divisions of the AFGA decided to make an effort to obtain a lease from the provincial government of the area, and to re-establish operations. A 10 year lease was finalized in 2004 on the 417 acres that comprises the facility and plans were made to refurbish and upgrade the buildings and other fixed assets of the camp.
With the financial support of various Fish & Game clubs and other funders, our dedicated volunteer board have since developed the upper range area by adding a kitchen unit, 13 cabins, washroom and shower house facility, barrier free washroom, laundry facilities and a learning centre.
The current lease is set to expire in December of 2031.
